Adventure to Costa Rica

Why Costa Rica?

There are many reasons why Costa Rica is an exciting holiday destination for many visitors whether travelling as a family or with friends.  Not only is Costa Rica the happiest place on the, planet according to the Happy Planet Index (Great Britain is currently at number 34), but is renowned for its biodiversity, abundant wildlife and endless opportunities for adventure.  The country also has beautiful golden beaches and very good coffee!

Below is a sample itinerary giving an overview of how to fill a 16 day trip.

Day One

Fly to San José, the capital of Costa Rica.  Relax in your hotel after your flight and get ready for an early start the next day.

Day Two

After breakfast, journey to Tortuguero National Park with its maze of canals and rivers, teaming with wildlife.  The route to the park is very scenic and once the roads come to an end, you will take a motor-driven canoe to your lodge for lunch.  Go on a guided jungle hike in the afternoon or visit the tiny village of Tortuguero before returning to your lodge for dinner.

Day Three

After a hearty breakfast the next morning, explore the landscape of Tortuguero.  Take a boat trip through the flooded forest.  With the help of an expert guide, spot wildlife including tropical water birds, howler monkeys and macaws.   Perhaps, spot an iguana sitting on a tree branch as you pass by.

Day Four

Enjoy a free day at your lodge, relaxing in the pool or the beautiful gardens.  Perhaps take a tour of the canals in the afternoon.

Day Five

Travel to Guapiles today.  Pick up your own car rental and drive to Sarapiqui.

Day Six

Get ready for an adrenaline rush with a fun morning of white water rafting along the Rio Sarapiqui.  In the afternoon, hike some of the nature trails or take a coffee or chocolate tour nearby.

Day Seven

Drive from Sarapiqui to the highlands and Arenal Volcano.

Day Eight

Explore Arenal Volcano, a natural adventure playground, home to hanging bridges, rainforest walks and lake kayaking.  Enjoy one of Costa Rica’s thrilling zip line and canopy tours.

Day Nine

The adventure continues with kayaking on Lake Arenal, zip lining or white water rafting.  Maybe you would prefer a trip to the Rio Celeste waterfalls or a hike through one of the park’s trails instead or you may simply prefer to relax by the hotel pool.

Day Ten

Leaving Arenal will take you to the secluded dry forest area around Rio Perdido.  If you missed the waterfall the day before, drive via Tenoria National Park to take in the view.

Day Eleven

Enjoy some free time in Rio Perdido and Costa Rica’s only thermal river.  For another adrenaline rush, zip line through the Rio Blanco canyon, mountain bike around the extensive network of trails or try river tubing.

Day Twelve

The Pacific coast awaits.  Descend from the tropical dry forest to the Guanacaste plains and arrive at your beach resort.

Day Thirteen

Time for the beach.  Kick back, relax, take a stroll along the beach, catch the sunset and swim in the sea. The waters are calm and tranquil.

Day Fourteen

This is your final day so make the most of the relaxation.  How about a visit to the spa?

Day Fifteen

Drive back to San José for your overnight flight home.

When to visit

High season is December to April when you can expect pleasantly high temperatures and less rainfall.  Whilst Costa Rica experiences rain all year round, most showers are tropical; typically short and sharp.  Easter is generally drier than between June and August.

The above trip is purely a guide and any trip to Cost Rica would be tailormade.  Prices for this trip are from £3,370 per person for 16 days including accommodation, scheduled international flights, fully insured vehicle hire and 24 hour support whilst you travel.
