Virgin Gorda - BVI

The British Virgin Islands – the jewels in the Caribbean crown

This amazing destination is experiencing a well deserved come back following the devastating hurricanes of recent years. These jewels in the crown of the Caribbean are welcoming, incredibly cheery and offer a wealth of activities for couples, families and individual travellers. With four main islands and almost 50 smaller islands, they are also very beautiful. The lack of fussiness across the islands radiates a laid back vibe and accommodation is available to suit everyone. It is also a sailor’s mecca. Here’s a low down of some of our favourites and a insight into what you can do whilst you are here;

Rosewood Little Dix Bay

Recently reopened following a major refurbishment, Rosewood Little Dix Bay has kept it’s traditional charm which works in tandem with the resort’s amazing sophisticated updates. Dreamy beachfront accommodation, gourmet cuisine, a relaxing spa and of course that beautiful crescent shaped beach are what stand Little Dix out from the crowd. This iconic resort will surely see guests, past and new, making this gorgeous spot their destination of choice. Being located on Virgin Gorda offers plenty of opportunities for exploration too whether just on the island or venturing further afield by boat.

Guana Island

Simple and peaceful, guests love Gauna Island. Privately owned, Guana island has always retained a barefoot, natural charm which oozes rustic chic. Guests are accommodated in just 15 sea view rooms or, for that perfect Caribbean island experience, one of the island’s 4 villas. Tennis and hiking are available for more active guests.  The gorgeous spa and the excellent cuisine created with locally sourced ingredients complete the island facilities.  Guana island is a laid back gem.

Necker Island

Sir Richard Branson private paradise Necker Island is worth a mention and not necessarily as out of range as you may think. Although predominantly booked exclusively, Necker offers individual weeks and the opportunity to book an individual suite. The joy of this is that you can enjoy all the benefits of a private island a dedicated team and tailormade activities, as long as you are happy to share with a small number of like minded people looking for the same experience. Don think it’s all wild parties, it’s what you want it to be and that’s what you pay for. It is however utterly gorgeous and well worth considering perhaps for that special celebratory holiday.

Sailing

For real water babes, sailing is the ideal way to see the islands. Whether you are looking for a fully crewed experience with a captain to take the helm and a private chef or are a seasoned sailor and want to captain your own yacht, the British Virgin Islands offer an idyllic landscape to explore by boat. There is also the opportunity to just take a cabin on some yachts ensuring an intimate floating boutique hotel experience.

Anegada

Great for a day trip, the flat spit of sand that is Anegada looks very different from the other islands. Drop anchor on your own sailing holiday or join one of the daily boat trips that venture to the island. Whilst the rest of the BVIs were formed by volcanic eruptions, Anegada sits on a coral reef which results in the island flat formation. Anegada is the most distant of the British Virgin Islands but only an hour by boat from the main cluster making it an ideal spot to spend a day or even better, a gorgeous overnight stop. The island beaches are sublime see wild flamingos and pretty pink conch shells. Enjoy a lunch on the beach and the freshest lobster that has been plucked from the ocean that morning. Anegada is worth a visit to the BVI just on it’s own!

Diving

There are countless dive sites to explore in the British Virgin Islands, you are almost spoilt for choice. Underwater caves, massive boulders and healthy corals offer a spectacular diving experience. Of course, there are many shipwrecks too including the recently opened Kodiak Queen. Situated off the shore of Virgin Gorda, the Kodiak Queen is a former Navy fuel barge which survived the attack on Pearl Harbor and was then put into service as a local fishing boat. Just a couple of years ago it became an art installation and dive site following a restoration project by a local historian.

For those wanting to dip just below the surface, the snorkelling experience here is incredible. This is also the place to fish, kiteboard, windsurf and enjoy a range of exciting watersports.

Wherever you decide to stay and whatever you want to do whilst you are there, you will be contributing to the return of these incredible islands and will experience warmth, amazing hospitality and a fantastic holiday experience as a result.
